Write on Fieldwork Journal #2: Gender Display

In the coming week, we’ll start paying closer attention to bodies—not only as they signify, but as they move, interact with one another, and arrange themselves in space. In your next exercise, you’ll practice seeing how gender organizes these embodied arrangements and interactions. Choose a public event or space in which you can conduct around 30-60 minutes of participant observation. Take notes on the social interactions you see, the arrangement of bodies in space, and the ways different people engage with one another and with the objects around them. Pay special attention to how gender is communicated or marked through conventions of movement, gesture, distance, posture, eye contact, etc. Take notes, and then write a 1 paragraph summary of your observations and findings.
