Supply Chain Management (SCM) Services

Supply chain is essential for any organization for achieving global organization. It helps companies to have better responsiveness and flexibility as means of enhancing their competitive advantage (Gunasekaran & Ngai, 2004). Among the various organizations, trucking companies have incorporated supply chain management (SCM) in their service delivery. This paper evaluates the concept of the incorporation of SCM in the trucking companies. This exploration of SCM in the trucking companies evaluates SCM as incorporated by two companies; UPS Logistics and Schneider Logistics.

According to Gunasekaran and Ngai (2004), SCM seeks to achieve long-term and overall benefits to the parties involved in the supply chain. For such to be achieved, information sharing and cooperation are indispensable. Therefore and considering the variability of the .ordering done, information technology (IT) would be prudent for the aforementioned companies. Moreover, IT will enable the two companies to improve the quality and organization of data that they keep and share with their clients.  IT would also help the two companies to reduce the time consumed during customer order cycle (Sundarakani, Tan & Over, 2012). For instance, the incorporation of BIDSMART by Schneider company will help the company to save money and time for its customers during supply chain. Moreover, incorporation of IT by UPS Logistics will help the company to save cost for its customers using its UPS Order To Cash initiative.

With the globalization of the world trade, IT would be indispensable in achieving an online business for the two companies. The two companies will be able to allow their customers to do online ordering and management of their orders. Such process would be ideal for improving customer-company relationships that, otherwise, would be complex (Gunasekaran & Ngai, 2004). Sundarakani, Tan and Over (2012) explain that such improved customer-company relationship will help the companies to eliminate the intermediate steps involved in the supply chain by sharing of information and allowing customers to manage and track their orders and shipments.

UPS Logistics’ customers can use the company’s website to create shipments and make orders. UPS Logistics allows customers to make their shipment orders online after registering with the company as well as gain information regarding the services provided by the company. The website allows customers to have real-time tracking of their shipments or orders by using a UPS label to track the package. Moreover, UPS Logistics has a customer care center where they can ask questions online regarding services or make requests. The customer care center also provides the customers with telephone contacts that customers can call for making inquiries.

Schneider Logistics’ website allows its customers to make orders for package shipment (Schneider, 2016). Moreover, the website provides information regarding the cost incurred during the provision of the transportation services by allowing customers to have real-time access to the invoice. Schneider Logistic website also provides information regarding the services that they provide. For instance, customers can get information regarding border crossing, securing of the load, package protection and get truckload contacts. Moreover, there is customer service care where customers can make inquiries regarding SCM and other services offered by the company.  The website further provides information on some case studies on SCM that customers can use for benchmarking purposes.
