- What is your proposed topic: “Should students be allowed to obtain a degree entirely online?”
This should be the basic, overall topic that you are exploring. However, you need to make sure that your topic choice is narrow and clear. For example, don’t just say “My topic is obesity.” Instead, explain what specific argument you want to make about obesity. You also need to make sure that your argument is debatable. In other words, will reasonable people disagree with your claim?
- Why you are interested in this topic?
Don’t just say that you like the topic. Tell why you like it. What is it about the topic that fascinates you? More importantly, your reasons should make you consider how your audience will receive the topic. Your interest in the subject is crucial, but you will have to consider whether or not those reasons will make it interesting for someone else.
- What do you already know about the topic?
Explain what you already know about the topic. Assuming that you have some opinion on the topic, even that opinion is in the very developmental stage, explain what reasons you have for holding that opinion.
- What do you need to know/don’t know about the topic?
Explain what you need to find out to successfully make your argument and how you will find this information. Be specific.
- Why is this important?
Why should your audience care about your topic? How will it benefit your audience to consider your point of view or your research findings?
