Week 1: Legal Underpinnings of Business Law [1500-word minimum; three scholarly sources in addition to text]
Imagine that you own each of the following businesses:

- The businesses are being sued for breach of contract. Create a matrix that lists each business, and compare and contrast your personal liability exposure as an owner as a result of the lawsuit.
- For each business entity, analyze how you might limit your liability exposure as an owner.
- Describe a business that you may own some day or that you currently own. [Even if you never plan to own a business, pretend as if you will do so for the purposes of this assignment.] Examine the best business organizational form for the business that you have described, including in your examination personal liability exposure, management, taxation, and ease of formation.
Week 2: Negligent Tort [1500-word minimum; three scholarly sources in addition to text]
Visit the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
Click on “Recalls.” Choose one product that has been recalled.
- Describe the product subject to recall, including the recall date, recall number, and the reason for the recall.
- Analyze whether the manufacturer would be liable for negligence if the product had not been recalled and had caused harm to a consumer.
- Discusses the following in relation to the product recall:
- Duty of Care
- Standard of Care
- Breach of the Duty of Care
- Actual Causation
- Proximate Causation
- Actual Injury
- Defenses to Negligence
- Analyze and apply a relevant consumer protection statute identified under “Consumer Protection” in Chapter 8 of your text in conjunction with the product recall that you have identified. Must address the topic with critical thought.
Week 3: Elements of a Contract [1500-word minimum; three scholarly sources in addition to text]
Suppose that the Fabulous Hotel hires you as head chef under a two-year employment contract. After two years, another hotel wants to hire you. However, in the original employment contract you signed with the Fabulous Hotel, the following paragraph appears:
“The below-signed agrees not to work as a chef for another hotel in the same metropolitan area for a period of two years after leaving our employ.”
- Describe and analyze the five elements of a contract that must exist for this agreement to be enforceable.
- Explain why this contract is governed by common law or the Uniform Commercial Code [UCC].
- Examine at least two circumstances in which this non-compete agreement would be unenforceable.
Week 4: Outline of Final Paper [600-word minimum; ten-10 scholarly sources in addition to text]
The paper must be one to two pages, excluding the title page and references page[s], and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center
Address all of the following parts of this assignment:
- Prepare a one- to two-page double-spaced outline of your Final Paper.
- The outline must contain the following major sections that will exist in the Final Paper:
- A description of a business situation that presents a legal and ethical issue.
- A description of at least two ethical theories under which the situation will be analyzed.
- An explanation of the specific areas of law under which the situation will be analyzed.
- The outline must be accompanied by a reference page that includes at least 10 scholarly sources that will be used in your Final Paper.
Week 5: Anti-Discrimination Laws Related to Employment [1500-word minimum; 3 scholarly sources in addition to text]
Your supervisor has placed you in charge of hiring a new, full-time administrative assistant for your department.
- Prepare an advertisement for that position that complies with federal law. This advertisement must be detailed. The minimum length of your job description must be 300 words [approximately three-fourths of a page]. You can make up the job details but must include the following:
- A job description
- A description of the job duties
- A description of the minimum qualifications
- Prepare 10 illegal questions that must not be asked. For each question, be sure to justify your reasoning.
- Prepare 10 legal questions that may be asked during the interview. For each question, be sure to justify each question.
Week 6: Final Paper [4200-word minimum; using the ten-10 scholarly sources from week 4 assignment in addition to text]
Prepare an 11- to 15-page paper [not including the title and reference pages] that assesses a legal/ethical issue or situation relating to a current, previous, or potential future work environment. Use at least 10 scholarly sources that are suitable for research in a graduate-level course.
Your paper must include the following:
- A description of a business situation that presents a legal and ethical issue. The business situation must be from prior, current, or anticipated future employment experiences or from a current event. The description of the business situation must not exceed two pages.
- An analysis of the ethical concerns raised by the situation.
- Apply at least two different ethical theories to the situation to support at least two different outcomes.
- The paper must determine which ethical outlook as applied to this particular situation will result in the best legal outcome for the business.
- An explanation of at least three of the relevant areas of law that have been addressed in this course [e.g., constitutional law, contracts, anti-trust law, securities regulations, employment law, environmental law, crimes, or torts] and an assessment of the each area of law as it applies to the business situation identified.
- A recommendation to reduce liability exposure and improve the ethical climate or the overall ethics of the situation. Your recommendation must be supported by specific legal, ethical, and business principles. A recommendation to reduce liability exposure and improve the ethical climate or the overall ethics of the situation.
