This requires you to consider not just the specific operations that the military can conduct against terrorist groups directly but also their broader role/utility with in the state’s counter terrorism approach. Hence we are not looking for a general account of the military’s role in securing the state or a series of empirical examples strung together. There is also no need to provide a detailed discussion of what is meant by a non-state terrorist group, just providing a working definition in a sentence or two will be fine.
Your focus should be engaging with the question by looking how conceptually the military does/should deal with terrorists specifically, preferably with an empirical example or two illustrating this in practice. You also should be providing some discussion of why the military does/should perform these roles. This will require you to primarily be familiar with topic 5’s material, although you will need to have a firm grasp of the topics 1, 2 and 4.
