Your first paragraph needs to tell your reader what you intend to demonstrate, or prove, or assert, or argue. It’s not enough to tell us what your subject matter is, or to tell us that you are going to compare two things. [“This paper will compare the mothers in My Life as a Dog and Ponette,” for instance, is too vague.] What is your opinion about your subject matter? Or, what has thinking about this connection taught you that you want to share with us?
Keep in mind that your thesis should not be a long laundry list [i.e., this & this are different; this & this are the same]. The best theses usually make a single point – one specific and narrow enough to be demonstrated within the confines the assignment. The best place to put your thesis statement is often at the end of your first paragraph.
