Discussion: Blueprint and the Common Core State Standards

There has been growing interventions, and reforms advocated the education system in the US. The intervention of the Federal government has been on the increase during the Obama administration. There are two competing forces affecting the education system. These forces include the Blueprint of Reform that represents former standards and the Common Core Standards. The following sections compare and contrast the two forces.

Both the Blueprint of Reforms and the Common Core Standards advocate for a rigorous education system. Both standards require that the learning process is holistic and extensive to prepare students for colleges and careers. Moreover, the two standards advocate for rich content that will enable the students to contribute to the country’s democracy and in the economy.

However, there are differences between Common Core Standards and the Blueprint for Reforms. The Common Core Standards requires the education system is centralized. Students across all the states are required to obtain specific skills be the end of a given grade. On the contrary, the Blueprint for Reforms does not call for centralization of the education system. The Blueprint advocates for attention on the results and rather not the means and does not indicate that adoption of Common Core Standards is a requirement. It allows states not to adopt the Common Core Standards although they are required to upgrade their standards in education.

The Blueprint also advocates for the consideration of the learning environment of the students (United States Department of Education, 2010). Such consideration will allow formulation of an education system that will ensure that the students are safe, successful and healthy. The Common Core Standards do not promote for such use of data but rather on the means of achieving the required skills at the end of various grades (Common Core State Standards Initiative, 2011).

The Common Core standards pose various challenges to the education system. For instance, the state standards are too numerous making it difficult for them to be taught in a year in an extensive manner. The standards also hold students to low expectations compared to internationally performing nations. Common Core Standards Initiative (2011) also promote centralization of education which might end pressures on public schools. Such pressure ensures that these schools improve their competitive atmosphere. It is also prudent to consider that every student is unique, and the use of common standards may hinder the advancement of their diverse nature.

However, the centralization of education will ensure equity among students from various backgrounds. Chances of students from poor background having an education system of low quality will be eliminated. Considering these factors, I think the Common Core Standards will have detrimental effects on education system since the cons outweigh the pros.
