*****Discuss: [these QUESTIONS ARE FOR THE “Describe the indoor classroom environment”]
What did you see in the classroom that might promote a child’s curiosity and exploration?
What materials are provided to invite imagination or a sense of wonder?
What materials support the children’s fine motor skills?
What materials give children the opportunity to count, sort, stack, or notice differences in length, height, or weight?
How much access do children have to the materials/equipment in the classroom?
Do children need to frequently ask adults for materials?
Are materials or areas available to children for a substantial portion of the day or only at limited times?
Are materials easily accessible to children?
Are there enough materials to inhibit conflict? How free are children to move around the classroom?
Are some areas “out of bounds?”
******* PLEASE HAVE 5 DIFFERENT PARAGRAPHS FOR ME PLEASE :]
CHD 026 Classroom Observation
Your first paragraph will be a brief introduction to the observation as a whole. This paragraph is where you will provide me with a “blueprint” or some outline for your assignment. You are introducing your paper to me, offering some introductory remarks, and describing how the document will look. This should roughly be a paragraph.
Indoor classroom environment
Describe the physical space, furnishings in the setting, variety of lightning and textures, what you see decorating the walls, and the overall tone. Describe how the classroom is organized. Notice each of the areas or “centers” teachers have arranged and describe what materials, equipment, or furnishings have been selected for learning and discovery. Suppose you are unfamiliar with early childhood environments. In that case, these areas may include:A place for children to use art materials,a place where children engage in pretend or imaginary play,a block or building space,a reading or library area,a science area, an area with fine motor toys such as Legos, puzzles, or connecting toys, a Music/Movement area [musical instruments, CD’s and player, etc.], a quiet corner or space designed for one/two children. Lastly, please make sure to address the discussion questions in this section. The Indoor Classroom Environment should be roughly 1 – 1.5 pages in length.
Philosophy for learning
Look around the classroom; what can you tell about the teacher’s philosophy of learning from what you see and observe. Consider the type of children’s work that is displayed and how and where it is displayed in the classroom. Does the work displayed represent children’s individuality and personal creativity, or is the work displayed similar to each other? Do you think that the classroom teacher values discovery, exploration, and child-centered learning, or does the classroom teacher focus or teacher-centered activities and projects? How can you tell from the photos and videos? Provide examples of what you see to support your thinking. This should roughly be 1 page.
Observe the outdoor play yard environment
Describe the outdoor play yard, including the surfaces [grass, sand, concrete, tanbark], landscape, and vegetation [bushes, trees, flowering plants, and gardens], provision for shade [both constructed and natural]. Include the stationary gross motor equipment such as a climbing structure or jungle gym or any portable equipment such as balls, hoops, trikes, wagons, or crates. Describe any materials or equipment which might be used to promote fine motor skills such as buckets/shovels, paints/brushes, chalk balls/bats. What materials are available or provided to the child to invite or promote curiosity or exploration of the natural world? Discuss any experiences which you feel promote individual creativity or support the child’s imagination. Is there any evidence that teachers plan for this space, introducing new materials, or changing the arrangement of portable equipment? This should roughly be 1 page.
Reflect and respond
Please consider what you have learned throughout this semester about developmentally appropriate experiences for children. Provide examples of the ways in which this classroom presents those types of deep, meaningful learning experiences and discuss the changes you feel need to happen to improve the quality of those experiences in both the classroom and play yard. This should roughly be 1-1.5 pages.
