In recent years, the practice of stop and frisk by certain police department in the US has been criticized by scholars and human right activists. Particularly under attack have been the disparities in regards to the application of such policing strategies by race and poverty level of the communities and the repercussions of such practice to the police-community relations.
Please read Coming of Age with Stop and Frisk: Experiences, Self-Perceptions, and Public Safety Implications [Links to an external site.], produced by Vera Institute of Justice using a sample of youth from New York City and answer the following questions:
- On page 9, the report detailed how the study sample was constructed. How many study sites were selected? What is the one common characteristic of all the youth participated in the study?
- Could you summarize the attitude toward the police among youth surveyed in this study? What about their willingness to report crime?
- Among the four recommendations by Vera, which one do you think is the most important to rebuild the trust between the police and the youth in the most affected communities?
