First Draft
I am expecting approximately 5 pages. This need not be the first five pages. I would like to see a strong thesis.
Here is an example of an outline of a research paper:

1. Introduction
States the thesis. The thesis provides focus for the paper. Everything that follows must reflect the thesis. The thesis poses a research question – something to be analyzed. That is, the paper should not simply be descriptive of a topic. The paper must analyze arguments in favor of and disputing the thesis. The introduction previews these arguments. The introduction makes a compelling case for the reader to continue reading.
2. Literature review
Discusses what previous researchers have found. Write a paragraph or two about each paper. Can be arranged chronologically or by theme. Places your work in the context of the literature on the topic. The literature review provides the background that allows your reader to understand your arguments.
3. Analysis
Discussion of arguments and evidence that support the thesis
Discussion of arguments and evidence that refute the thesis
Synthesis of arguments – does the weight of the evidence support or refute the thesis?
Any thesis worth writing about has multiple points of view, arguments for and against.
Think about how you might use data to provide evidence.
4. Conclusions
Restate your main findings. Explain what it all means. What has been resolved? What has not? Discuss what work remains to be done. Does your work lead to other research questions?
Include citations in your first draft. Include a bibliography for the works you have cited. Follow the APA format for citations.
