AZ Family Center

AZ Family Center is an inclusive community-based organization dedicated to strengthening families through services that promote healthy minds, bodies, and spirits.

AZ Family Center was founded in 2014 after a community needs assessment identified that families across Phoenix felt there were limited resources that helped to promote family well- being.

We believe in building a better future by strengthening families. Our vision is a world where all families have the resources and supports they need to live happy and healthy lives. Ultimately, our goal is to help build strong families by offering a safe, accessible space for the community to learn, heal, grow, and have fun. Our beautiful, 10,000 square foot building is located in Downtown Phoenix just a few steps from the Roosevelt/Central light rail station. AZ Family Center is supported by funding through independent donations, multiple foundation grants, and multiple contracts with the city of Phoenix. We have a robust staff of 30 total employees.

To best serve this vision, AZ Family Center started the Stronger Together Program.

Stronger Together Program

About Stronger Together

Since its start in 2014, the Stronger Together Program has served an average of 300 clients a year. Stronger Together is housed within the AZ Family Center’s Downtown Phoenix building. Stronger Together provides three main services: Movement Matters, Mindful Parenting/Caretaking, and therapy [both group and individual]. The goal of Stronger Together is to support families in strengthening their bonds and learning healthy communication strategies by spending quality time together. Stronger Together is funded by a foundation grant and a contract with the city of Phoenix.

Stronger Together works to connect Phoenix families with the Phoenix community and bridge gaps in community needs. Stronger Together believes that by helping families build emotional intelligence through family activities and culturally humble education, families in the Phoenix community will be stronger and happier. Stronger Together also believes that no family should go without access to mental health services. That’s why Stronger Together offers low to no- cost therapy [individual and group] for families.

Typically, our clients attend at least 90% of their chosen service sessions.

Because we understand that families are diverse, we provide supportive services to any adult who identifies as a person who provides care to youth [e.g. whether a legal guardian, grandparent, aunt, etc.]. Additionally, we provide services to the youth in their care. Our services are family-focused and aimed at strengthening familial bonds and facilitate healthy relationships. All clients receive one, 60-minute intake session to help match clients with the service[s] that best suit their needs.

Movement Matters

Our Movement Matters service is aimed at increasing quality time that families spend together while also increasing their time spent being physically active. Each cycle is 8-weeks long and runs 4 times a year. Past individual sessions have included tennis, volleyball, soccer, and dance. Classes are 1x a week for 90 minutes [6pm-7:30pm]. ]. During each session, 5 families learn how to work collaboratively while having fun

Participant progress is measured through self- reported questions completed during intake and exit surveys by parents about their whether they, as a result of their participation, are spending increased quality time with their youth, and report increased self-efficacy around parenting. Questions about whether they have increased their physical activity and other health behaviors are also posed through the intake and exit surveys.

Movement Matters has four full-time staff members.

Mindful Parenting/Caretaking

Our Mindful Parenting service is designed to increase understanding between parents/caretakers and their teenage [13-18] youth. Each cycle is 5-weeks long and runs 3 times a year. The Mindful Parenting/Caretaking group meets once a week for 60-minutes and has space for 15 parent-child pairs. Each session focuses on strengthening a different aspect of the parent/youth relationship: communication, conflict, being present, quality time, and friendship. The goal of Mindful Parenting/Caretaking is to increase self-efficacy around conflict resolution, build confidence around communication, and increase understanding between the parent/caretaker and youth. Participant progress is measured through self-reported questions by pre-posttest given during intake and exit. There are three full time Mindful Parenting/Caretaking staff members.

Therapy

We offer two therapy services based on a client’s specific needs: individual therapy and group therapy. Individual therapy is offered year-round for 1-hour a week for 8-weeks. Group therapy is offered for 1-hour a week for 8-weeks, 4 times a year [2 rounds for adults and 2 rounds for youth]. Each group session has enough space for 15 participants. There are six full-time licensed clinical social workers who run both group therapy sessions as well as individual sessions.

Group therapy is CBT-based and aimed at decreasing depression symptomology in participants as measured by the PHQ-9.

Individual therapy is aimed at decreasing depression symptomology in participants as measured by the PHQ-9 as well as increased hopefulness as measured by the Beck Hopelessness Scale.
