The satisfaction of employees in any job is an essential aspect of the corporate world. According to Lockyer (2013), employee satisfaction influences service delivery and the types of services provided in any business. Moreover, Lockyer accounts for the relationship in the services offered to customer satisfaction. Therefore, there is a link between employee satisfaction and customer satisfaction. Moreover, employee satisfaction is essential in ensuring their retention.

Employee satisfaction is of essence to any organization. Consequently, there is need to ensure that employees are satisfied. The research seeks to determine the various aspects that affect employee satisfaction. The primary thesis statement of the research is:

‘What aspects influence employee satisfaction in the hospitality industry in Singapore.’

Literature Review

The hospitality sector refers to a section of the business industry involved in provision of services to guests. The workforce is an essential element in the hospitality sector in meeting and coping with the requirements of the guests which makes the industry to be labor intensive (Sangaran, 2015). However, employee turnover has been on the rampant in Singapore jeopardizing the operations of the hospitality sector. Consequently, there is need to study factors that affect employee satisfaction in this sector.

The review considers the issue of employee retention in the hospitality industry in Singapore. According to Brown (2014), Singapore has experienced a high rate of employee turnover and is expected to experience continued strong economic growth. With the high economic growth expected, the turnover rate of employees is also prospected to increase. Consequently, there is need for organizations to ensure employee retention.

Several factors intertwine to determine the issue of employee retention. According to Koh and El’Fred  (2001), one such factor is that of career development and rewarding employees. Madlock (2008) also observed that there is a correlation in employee engagement in the organizational management and their satisfaction with their job. Kabir and Parvin (2011) explain that relationship with other staffs determines an employee’s satisfaction. Moreover, Kabir and Parvin state that expectations of an employee from their job are also essential in determining their satisfaction.

Other aspects that influence job satisfaction include such as promotions and rewards and employee recognition (Brown, 2014). Moreover, the working environment and the nature of job have been shown to affect job satisfaction of employees (Arokiasamy, 2013; Allen & Wilburn, 2002). Shakeel (2015) explain that work-life balance and social environment are also important elements that affect employee satisfaction.

Method

In conducting the study, the research will use qualitative methodology. A questionnaire would be used to conduct the survey. The formulation of the questions in the questionnaire would be in a way that conforms to the Likert scale (Järveläinen, 2012). The questionnaire will be a ten multiple questions with qualitative methods.

Sampling will be dependent on age and affiliation to the industry sector. A sample of 70 staffs in a hotel will be selected. The sample respondents chosen will be of age 21 years and above. The respondents will be chosen from Four Seasons Hotel Singapore. A qualitative analysis would be used on the collected data. Simple T-tests would be used in areas where a relation between two variables can be performed using quantitative data generated while conducting the study to establish relationships.
