Questions

Answer one question from Part A, one question from Part B, and one question from Part C.

Part A – “Traditional”

  1. Describe Inuit kinship and social relations. What relationships exist between and among

Inuit, animals, and other beings? How are Inuit connected with each other and with other

beings?

  1. How do Inuit traditionally generate and pass on knowledge? What concepts guide Inuit

learning and teaching?

  1. What role do angakkut have in Inuit society? How do angakkuit navigate the forces of the universe and work to achieve harmony with spirits and beings such as Sila (the weather), Nuliajuk, and other cosmological aspects of Inuit beliefs? What might happen if balance is not achieved?

Part B – “Colonialism”

  1. What impacts did whalers, fur traders, the RCMP, and missionaries have on Inuit society?

  1. What obstacles did Inuit face in the process of negotiating for Nunavut?

  1. What impacts are globalized and industrialized economies having on Inuit society and

culture? What benefits and challenges are presented by these economies?

Part C – “Synthesis”

  1. Watch again “Kunuk Family Reunion” (http://www.isuma.tv/isuma-productions/kunuk

family-reunion). Discuss the impact of colonialism on the Kunuk family: how was/is the

family impacted by the changes, and how is their culture rooted in Inuit or Qalunnaat

traditions? Contextualize the film (what you hear and see) with what you have learnt in

class.

  1. Today, changing environments and climates are a concern for the entire world. The

Arctic is viewed as a place that will experience some of the most extreme transformations

in the years and decades to come. What might be the impacts of climate change on Inuit

subsistence activities, culture, and society? How are Inuit addressing changing climates

and also increasingly politicized environmental movements? How might the historical

experience of Inuit having always lived in an always changing environment prepare

people for future change?

  1. Inuit visual, performing, and written arts are vibrant and dynamic areas of Inuit aesthetic

expression. In recent years, Inuit artists have won major awards such as the Caméra d’Or

(Zacharias Kunuk) and the Sobey Art Award (Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory). Inuit are

also deeply involved in the curation and design of art galleries and museums, such as the

ongoing INUA show at Qaumajuq in Winnipeg (co-curated by Heather Igloliorte, Krista

Ulujuk Zawadski, Kablusiak, and asinnajaq). What does it mean for Inuit to have more

and more power and control over forms of Inuit art and the venues and ways in which

Inuit art is shared?
