Empathy and Generalist Practice Discussion Board (15 points):
This discussion board relates to this week’s learning objective: compare theoretical perspectives that impact generalist practice and how they connect to a client’s life. Evaluation of the empathy process and identification of key components to empathy. Explanation of social work values and ethics through application to case studies.
The purpose of this discussion board is to help you understand the basics of generalist practice in Social Work. You will practice identifying a theoretical framework that could be applied to their case studies. Additionally, you will also apply key aspects of empathy to their case and evaluate the importance of empathy. You will also identify one ethical issue that they locate in their case study and how you would handle it (think back to the NASW Code of Ethics from Module 1). You will also self rate the priority of the 6 core values of social work in reflection to their case study. You can reach learning objectives by reading the case study you are assigned (found in the File Exchange within your group) and providing thoughtful response that includes critical thinking. You will be expected to apply course concepts to your client’s case.
Directions:
Create a new thread and in the subject line have your name and the title. Posts should be no less than 300 words and no more than 500 words. You need to address the following questions in your response:
- How would you demonstrate empathy for your client? How is this different than showing sympathy to your client?
- Out of all the theories and frameworks discussed in Chapter 6, which one do you think would benefit your client the most? Why?
- Do you think that your client would benefit more from group therapy, individual therapy, or both? Discuss the “why” behind your choice.
- Discuss one ethical challenge you observed in your case study (or one you think will be a problem for you). Then discuss how you would resolve it using the NASW Code of Ethics. Additionally, rank the importance of all Social Work core values as you see them relating to your case study.
5 . What is one question that you have about your case study/client and its relation to this week’s module material?
- Please ensure that you respond to at least one peer in addition to your own post! Peer responses are expected to be a minimum of 100 words. Be sure to include critical thinking and thoughtful feedback in your response to ensure you earn the full amount of points in your post.

Sample Discussion Paper
Case Study: Empathy and Generalist Practice Discussion Board
I would demonstrate empathy to my client by taking an approach that ensures that the client feels we are on the same emotional level. I would express compassion as well as portray that I have a deeper understanding of the situation by approaching the issue from his/her perspective. This is different from showing sympathy to the client. Showing sympathy can make the client feel I pitied or felt sorry for them, which would create a sense of disempowerment or inferiority.
In reference to the theories and frameworks discussed in chapter 6, Cognitive-behavioral theory would be appropriate for my client’s situation. One of the aspects of the cognitive-behavioral theory is that it examines the origin of the problem in a given situation. In this case, it would help me in exploring how my client feels and behaves in reference to his situation. Identifying and understanding the problem would guide me in explaining the reasons for his behavior or feelings and thus help him to adjust accordingly.
Both group therapy and individual therapy would be effective for my client. Group therapy involves many people who share their experiences regarding a given problem and how they are coping with it. In group therapy, through the experiences of others, my client would realize that what he is going through affects people universally. As a result, he will feel encouraged and not alone. This would instill hope in him and make him mentally strong to cope with the problem. Individual therapy, on the other hand, would allow him to express himself about his problem(s) freely. This would help me to focus on the problem and counsel him on how to get through the situation.
One of the ethical challenges that will be a problem for me in the study relates to informed consent. The client has to have the consent that I am helping him through psychotherapy. This would be a problem since he does not have legal parents or guardians, which would help in such a situation. I would ensure that his grandmother, Mrs. Harjo, gets legal documentation to adopt him as this would make the process of ensuring that the challenge of getting informed consent for psychotherapy is eliminated. In regard to the importance of all social work key values in the case study, I would rank them as the worth of each person and dignity, service, social justice, human relationships and integrity.
Question:
Will the psychotherapy process affect my client’s relationship with other people especially in school?
Response
Every child has the right to be given the appropriate treatment. This case study, however, demonstrates that the people involved in ensuring that children are treated in the right way have neglected their duty. Following the death of his mother at such a young age, Tony should have been helped in time to have guardianship. His grandmother who is seeking for legal guardianship does not get help from the authority. This involves a form of institutional discrimination and thus the need for intervention by a social worker. In reference to your work, you have effectively covered all the areas regarding the case study. However, you have poorly addressed the fourth question regarding ethical challenges. It could have been more effective if you stated the ethical challenge first before discussing how you would tackle it. Despite this objection concerning the fourth question, you have done excellent work in meeting the requirements of this paper especially in the way you have presented your arguments.
